CONGRESSMAN JIM LANGEVIN VISITS CALVARY
January 7, 2006, PROVIDENCE, R.I. U.S. Representative Jim Langevin (D-RI), from Rhode Islands Second Congressional District (which includes South Providence), came to Calvary Baptist Church on January 7 for the filming of a special program that will be viewed on The Learning Channel (TLC) sometime during 2006. It is currently being titled "Super Humans" and will feature the stories of individuals who have overcome disabilities to reach high levels of achievement.
At the age of 16, Langevin was injured while working with the Warwick Police Department in the Boy Scout Explorer program. A gun accidentally discharged and a bullet struck Langevin, leaving him paralyzed. At the filming he spoke about how all people face challenges and adversity in their lives and we must seek to contribute to the lives of others despite these challenges. He quoted Gandhi who said, "If you would like to see change, then be the change you desire."
Members of Calvary and representatives from South Providence Neighborhood Ministries, which is located at the church, showed him the sanctuary and told of the plans to restore the building. They then discussed issues of mutual concern including improving public education in Providence, housing for the elderly, health care, the minimum wage and after school programs for children.
